Choosing a Gate Operator by Gate Type, Weight and Daily Use
Pad-mount slide, pad-mount swing arm or linear actuator
A sliding gate takes a pad-mounted slide operator. For the MAX 1500 PRO pad-mount slide operator, Maximum Controls specifies four 1/2-inch sleeve anchors and recommends a deeper pad as gate weight rises, at least two feet for heavier gates. A swing gate takes a pad-mounted arm unit such as the Megatron 1400 PRO swing gate operator, or a MAX Super Arm 2300 linear actuator, configured to push or pull the leaf.
Read weight and length as one rating
Swing ratings shrink as the leaf lengthens. The Super Arm 2300 is published at 2,300 lb for an 8-foot leaf, 2,000 at 12 feet, 1,800 at 16 and 1,500 at 20; the Megatron 1400 PRO at 1,400 lb at 15 feet or 1,200 at 20. Slide figures are stated for a level gate: 1,500 lb and 25 feet for the 1500 PRO, 2,200 lb and 50 feet for the MAX 2200 PRO slide gate operator, whose product sheet gives 60 feet instead of the installation guide’s 50. Weigh the leaf and read its length’s rating.
Usage class first, then cycles
UL 325 requires each operator to be marked with every class it is intended for: I, a home of one to four single-family dwellings; II, five or more units or a site serving the public; III, an industrial site closed to the public; IV, a guarded restricted-access site. The four models above carry Classes I through IV. The MAX Rhino 5500 industrial slide operator, rated for a 5,500 lb level gate, is marked III and IV only, so it is not listed for a home driveway or an apartment entrance. All five have continuous-duty ratings; on solar, cycles per day set the limit.
Solar or AC power
Maximum Controls’ solar map places Riverside and Corona in Zone 1, using six sun-hours per day for sizing. Its MAX Solar Pack chart for a pad-mount slide operator with a 60 W panel and 26 mA of total draw gives 454 cycles a day for a light gate and 302 for a heavy one, planning for one rainy day; planning for ten cuts those to 85 and 57, and at 250 mA the heavy gate’s ten-day figure is 19. Hence the guide’s call for low-power keypads, receivers and loop detectors. The pack fits every PRO series slide operator and the Megatron 1400 HP PRO and 2200 HP PRO swing operators. If your daily count or accessory list sits near the bottom of that chart, run AC to the gate: their AC control configurations accept 115 or 230 volts.
